Preparations
Please read your preparation instructions carefully. Following the correct preparation helps us obtain clear images and reduces the chance of delays or rescheduling your ultrasound.
Abdominal ultrasound
- Eat a fat free dinner the night before your appointment
- No dairy products or fried foods
- No carbonated drinks 12 hours before your appointment
- Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior.
- DO NOT eat breakfast
Abdomen and pelvis ultrasound
- Eat a fat free dinner the night before your appointment
- No dairy products or fried foods
- Nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior.
- Drink 5 glasses (2 bottles) of water one hour before your appointment time
- DO NOT VOID – a full bladder is necessary for the examination
Pelvic ultrasound (transabdominal or with transvaginal component)
- Drink 5 glasses (2 bottles) of clear fluids one hour before your appointment time (water, juice, black coffee or black tea)
- DO NOT VOID – a full bladder is necessary for the examination
- No fasting necessary
Obstetric (pregnancy) ultrasound
Drink 5 glasses (2 bottles) of clear fluids one hour before your appointment time (water, juice, black coffee or black tea)
Nuchal translucency (NT) ultrasound
- Drink 3 glasses (or 1.5 small bottles) of clear fluids one hour before your appointment time (water, juice, black coffee or black tea)
- You must bring all the papers from your doctor (blood work, requisition, I.P.S. screening paper, etc) with you to your appointment, and let the receptionist know your having a Nuchal Translucency done.
Transrectal / prostate ultrasound
- Purchase a Fleet enema or similar product from the pharmacy.
- Use the enema at home about 2 hours before your appointment so the lower bowel is empty.
- Drink roughly 4–5 glasses of clear fluid one hour before your exam and arrive with a full bladder.
- Do not void until after your scan unless the technologist instructs you to.
